After Covid, more people started quitting their jobs. Reasons ranged from not being able to stay working from home, a new outlook on life, and many other reasons. But did you know that as far back as 2015 that people were already quitting their jobs more so than usual? Believe it or not, more workers quitting may actually be to your advantage.
Why Are People Quitting Their Jobs?
One of the reasons prior to Covid is that there were so many job openings in 2015. This surplus allowed people to find a new job that better suited their needs. If we fast forward to 2021 or so, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 47 million Americans voluntarily quit their jobs — an unprecedented mass exit from the workforce, spurred on by Covid-19, that is now widely being called the Great Resignation.
But that is not necessarily true that Covid spurned this mass amount of leaving jobs. Instead, there are five key elements of quitting your job. These are,
- Retirement
- Relocation
- Reluctance
- Reshuffling
- Reconsideration
These are known as the five R’s. Of course, we saw an increase in those who quit during the pandemic, it’s just not as major as you might think. Those workers found out that they could have it better. Many were allowed to work at home, and when that was taken away, they found other work where they could remain in a telecommuting position. Others enjoyed being off work and made it fit their budget, so those may have quit for that reason – at least for now.
More Workers Quitting May Actually be to Your Advantage
So, how does this affect you? And how does more workers quitting their jobs help you? For one thing, this often means you have more of a pool to choose from. Just because an employee quit doesn’t mean they’re not actively looking for another position. Perhaps they are burned out from their current employment or they’re ready for a change.
This is where you can use that to your advantage. Make sure that your company’s culture is showcased so potential hires know what they’re getting into. Make sure you spotlight any and all perks that other companies may not offer, such as telecommuting or special benefits not usually offered. With enough insight, you can make workers quitting work to your advantage.
