You may have heard about the anti-work movement, but what is it, and how does it affect your business? Here is more information on the anti-work movement and what you should know.
What is the Anti-Work Movement?
Since the pandemic, many people have lost their jobs, started working remotely, or in any case, things have changed. While this may have started recently it seems, the thought of toxic work culture has led many to make changes. Part of those changes is the anti-work movement.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 4.3 million Americans willingly abandoned their jobs in August 2021 alone.
It is important to know that this movement was started long before the pandemic. The pandemic only amplified it. As people saw that they could make a change and live with it, it grew.
A lot of this movement started due to poor mental health and frustrations with the workplace. Many feel they are not getting paid enough for the work they do, and many are right. The cost of living has far exceeded the pay scale in recent years.
Other issues included along with unfair wages are unethical bosses, a toxic workplace, and an overall dissatisfaction with companies.
How Does This Affect Your Company?
It may be harder to hire or retain employees with this type of landscape. But it is important to know that the change starts with you. If employees feel valued and are paid a living or fair wage, you’ll have better luck at keeping good employees, and hiring likewise.
There are a few things to keep in mind.
Listen to Your Employees
It is a common myth that this movement is due to being lazy. Nothing is further from the truth. If your employees have concerns, address them without blaming the employee for discussing it in the first place. Be the company that looks at changes within. If you have many dissatisfied employees, maybe it’s you.
Pay a Fair Wage
Nothing fuels this movement faster than employees who are not paid fairly. We understand everyone has to cut corners at times. But if you pass that along to valuable employees, they’ll move on to a company that pays them what they’re worth.
Keep in mind that if you lose your good employees or cannot find good workers, that hurts your business.
