Empathetic Recruitment

With Covid at the forefront of our lives, the landscape of recruiting and working has changed. With more job openings, and hybrid opportunities, some things are better for the employee. But for the employer, recruiting in an empathetic way is crucial, and here’s why.

How Things Have Changed

As we all know, the landscape of employment changed at the start of the pandemic. Employees had to be furloughed, let go, or were allowed to telecommute. Much of these changes caused negative changes in the employee’s lives. Some had anxiety and stress, which is understandable. Many did not know if they could pay bills or take care of their families with all of the changes.

What About Employers?

Employers faced challenges too. They may have had to cut back on the number of employees, have shorter hours, or accept work from employees at home – if possible.

Why Is Empathetic Recruiting Important?

With employment opportunities at an all-time high, potential employees and current employees have more choices. This is why an empathetic approach is crucial.

Look at it this way, if an employee enjoys telecommuting and you no longer allow them to, they may seek employment elsewhere. Some have gotten used to the freedom that telecommuting or a hybrid situation gives them. If they’re an excellent employee, it is in your best interest to see if this can continue. If the worker is doing the same level of work in this type of setting, how does it hurt you to allow them to continue? We realize not all employers can work with a team from home, but that is just one example.

Recruiting In an Empathetic Way Is Crucial

This addresses current employees. But how is it relevant to your recruiting process? You’ll attract better and more satisfied employees by using these tips to recruit in a more empathetic way.

Show Trust

Potential hires want to be a part of what influences and drives your company. Allow potential hires to express themselves in a true way. Listen to their opinions, and take their values under consideration. This demonstrates social and cultural empathy.

Be Humble

You’re never going to have the perfect work environment. A less-than-humble attitude comes across as inauthentic. No business is without fault, and by trying to present a perfect company, it may throw potential hires off – because how can they possibly live up to your expectations?

Involve the Potential Hire

Show the potential worker why you are doing things the way you do. It gives them more insight into your company and let’s them feel like they’re already in-the-know.

Listen

You can learn a lot by listening during the recruitment process. By learning more about the person, you gain valuable insight into how they’ll work and how to train them properly.

Empathy Makes a Stronger Company

Empathy is never a weakness. Instead, it allows your company to thrive in an environment where people are heard, and matter.
